Vulcan Materials processes crushed and broken limestone and provides industrial chemicals.

Founded in 1916, the company is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. Vulcan employs 6,300 people and was among Information Week's 1995 Top 50 Companies.

 

Technology

Vulcan has a Unisys A series mainframe and HP9000 UNIX machines, connected with 1,500 PCs over a Novell Netware TCP/IP network. Software development is in COBOL, Linc, and DMS II on the Unisys platform; and C, PowerBuilder, Sybase, and ORACLE on the HPs. Additional software used includes the Group 4 query tool and EZSPEC (Design Support) reporting tool.

Job titles for Vulcan's computer professionals include Programmer Analyst, Systems Analyst/Programmer, Senior Systems Analyst/Programmer, Lead, Supervisor, and Director. Staff members are implementing PeopleSoft's purchasing, accounts payable, and inventory application packages on the HP9000 and writing C++ interfaces to the ORACLE database.


Culture

Computer professionals work in cubicles and offices in a nonsmoking environment. Standard office hours are 8 AM to 5 PM. A 40-hour workweek is standard. Travel represents from zero to 20 percent of a staff member's time, depending on the project. Business dress is business casual, with casual Fridays. Vulcan offers competitive salaries and good benefits, with challenging and varied technical assignments and the opportunity to learn the client/server environment.

Vulcan observes nine holidays. Employees earn two weeks of vacation to start, increasing to four weeks after ten years. The company pays for medical, disability, and dental insurance and offers life insurance. There are also 401(k) retirement plans. There has never been a layoff.


Candidates

Vulcan looks for computer professionals with good technical skills who learn quickly. A college degree is preferred, but not required. The ability to work on a team, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills, are highly valued.
