TRW Systems Division provides systems engineering services and develops and installs strategic and tactical command and control systems and information processing systems.

TRW, Inc.'s corporate headquarters is in Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1901, the company has 2,700 employees in the Washington, D.C., area.

 

Technology

Computer professionals at TRW work on IBM 30Xx or 43XX mainframes, VAX 11/7XX and Microvax machines, or other standard Department of Defense hardware. Operating systems may include MVS, MVS/XA, VM, and VMS. Languages used include FORTRAN, PASCAL, and Ada. Additional software that might be used includes the database management systems Model 204, Inquire, CA-IDMS/R, and Ingres. Additional software used may include DB2, SQL/DS, ORACLE, Nomad, REXX and Sybase, as well as CASE tools, IEF, and Cross Systems Product (IBMs' CSP). Seventy-six percent of the work is new development.

Around 1,100 employees are computer professionals. The following job titles at TRW represent functions and are not necessarily from junior to most senior position: Member of the Technical Staff, Software Engineer, Integration and Test Engineer, Software Communication Engineer, Software Systems Security Engineer, Database Technologist, Programmer Analyst, Work Package Manager, Subproject Manager, and Project Manager.

Application areas include data communications and signal processing. Communications environments may include LANs, SQL servers, Ethernet, Token Ring, and Gateways.


Culture

TRW works in state-of-the-art facilities in Fairfax and McLean, Virginia. There is generally a minimal need for travel and a standard amount of overtime, which may be compensated in certain cases.

TRW observes 13 holidays. They offer 15 days of vacation to start, including a 1-week company shut-down at the end of the year. After 5 years, employees earn 17 1/2 days of vacation, and after 10 years, they earn 20 days.

Candidates

TRW looks for technical capabilities and experience in the DoD environment. They also look for those with good verbal and written communications skills and the ability to work on a team. A background investigation is required for some positions.

TRW does hire entry-level people. They look for those with B.S. degrees in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or 6 years of military experience. Related summer or co-op experience is a plus.

TRW finds new employees through advertisements, employee referrals, and job fairs. In a typical year, TRW may hire over 200 computer professionals.
