Raytheon Company is a diversified company active in electronics, aviation, appliances, industry services, and publishing. There are three Boston-area divisions. The Missile Systems Division designs and manufactures ground-, air-, and ship-launched missile systems including the Patriot missile. Headquarters is in Bedford, Massachusetts. The Equipment Division's activities include air traffic control, satellite, and radar and ship systems. Division headquarters is in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The Submarine Signal Division, based in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, provides sonar systems for ships and submarines.

Raytheon was founded in 1922. The company has 76,000 employees worldwide, with 34,500 in eastern Massachusetts. Corporate headquarters is in Lexington, Massachusetts. In 1988, 55.3 percent of the company's sales were to the federal government. Raytheon is publicly-held. Revenue in 1988 was $8.2 billion.

 

Technology

Hardware includes IBM 3090s, DEC VAX, and HP 1000 systems. Operating systems include VM, MVS/XA, UNIX, and ULTRIX. Programming languages used include COBOL, Ada, C, FORTRAN, and PASCAL. Additional software used includes IMS/DB/DC, TELON, DFP/XA, ORACLE, ROSCOE, and ProMod.

There are 1,700 computer professionals at Raytheon. They work in scientific engineering applications for electronics systems and internal business applications. Job titles in the scientific engineering area include Member of Technical Staff, Software Design and Development Engineer, Senior Software Design and Development Engineer, and Principal Engineer. There is a dual career path for individual technical contributors and technical management. Job titles in Information Processing Systems (ISP) include Associate Programmer, Programmer, Senior Programmer, Programmer Analyst, Senior Programmer Analyst, Division Business Systems Specialist.

One division recently installed a paperless factory automation system throughout its plants. Another recent project was the development of real-time software for space-based signal processing systems.


Culture

Computer professionals work in Bedford, Tewksbury, Marlborough, Sudbury, and Wayland, Massachusetts and in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Smoking is permitted only in specified areas. The need for travel varies. The need for overtime is generally minimal. Candidates

Raytheon looks for candidates who can work independently and who understand systems integration. Candidates must be able to communicate well and be able to develop and implement new ideas. A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Business is preferred. The average computer professional has 17 years of experience and a Bachelor's degree.

Raytheon does hire entry-level computer professionals, preferring those with a Bachelor's degree in a related area. New employees are found through college recruiting, employee referrals, open houses, ads, and employment agencies. Raytheon hires 250 computer professionals in a typical year.
