Humana, Inc., provides managed health care plans to employers. Programs offered include health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), and managed Medicare, Medicaid, and dental programs for state government and private industry. Humana was a pioneer in capitation, the service by which the company provides medical service for a fixed fee per patient. Initially, this program was offered to the city of Louisville to provide health care to all indigents in the city.

Founded in 1961, Humana is a publicly-held corporation with 1994 revenues of $3.65 billion. The company employs 15,700 people. The corporate headquarters building in Louisville, Kentucky, was named "Building of the Decade" in the 1980s by Time magazine. The building includes a 50-foot waterfall in the lobby.

 

Technology

Software for Humana's IBM mainframe environment includes DB2 and CA-IDMS database management systems, COBOL, FOCUS, C++, and REXX languages; CICS, Lotus Notes, and Digitalk. Applications include EDI and client-server projects.

Job titles for the company's 450 computer professionals include System Engineer I, II; Consulting System Engineer I, II; Manager; Director; and Vice President.


Culture

The company pays for disability and life insurance, and part of the costs for medical and dental insurance. The company funds a retirement program and matches employee contributions to a 401(k) plan. In addition, discounts are offered at more than 60 Louisville retailers. Outplacement services and severance packages were offered employees affected by the company's 1992 layoff.
