Hewitt Associates provides consulting services on employee benefit and compensation programs. Hewitt Associates helps more than 75 percent of the country's Fortune 500 companies design employee benefits packages, tailor funding and financing of the programs, describe the programs to employees, and administer the programs. The company pioneered flexible benefit programs.

Founded in 1940, Hewitt Associates is headquartered in Lincolnshire, Illinois, has 3,500 employees, and is privately held. Hewitt Associates has been included in The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America, The 100 Best Companies to Work for in Canada, The Best Companies for Women, and was highlighted in a Sloan Management Review article, "The One Firm Firm: What Makes It So Successful."

Technology

Hewitt has an IBM 9021, model 842, running under MVS, an AMDAHL mainframe running via NetFrame Superservers, and more than 3,000 IBM-compatible PCs, PS/2s, and Apple Macintoshes in a client-server environment under Novell's Netware. Software development is in COBOL and PL/I under CICS and CMS, C, C++, SmallTalk, and Gupta's SQL, with an emphasis on object-oriented design. Software tools used include Knowledgeware's IEW, Bachman tools, and Scubed's DAISYS.

Hewitt Associate's 300 professionals are all called Associates; approximately 10 percent of the company's Associates are Principals. Seventy-five percent of the work is new development. Computer professionals recently developed a client-server version of their benefits administration system, retaining database management and business logic on the server platforms and a graphical user interface (GUI) on PCs. Staff members are helping clients implement Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) for the exchange of payroll, human resource, and benefits data.

Culture

All computer professionals work in private offices in a nonsmoking environment. They need to travel about five to ten percent of their time. Standard office hours are from 8:30 AM to 5 PM; the average workweek is 46 hours. Overtime is not compensated.

Hewitt's company culture promotes the strategic use of technology (12.5 percent of company revenues are invested in technology), a highly technical staff, a flat organizational hierarchy, and free lunches for employees.

Hewitt Associates observes eight holidays and offers two weeks of vacation to start, adding one day a year after five years, accumulating to three weeks after ten years, with a three week bonus at fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, and thirty years of service. The company offers six personal or family days a year and employees may buy an additional three days a year.

The company offers medical, disability, and life insurance; and tuition reimbursement. Additional benefits include adoption leave, cancer consulting, overnight and sick dependent care, smoking cessation counseling, matching college contributions, physical examinations, and company contributions to the 401 (k) plan. The company has never had a layoff.

Candidates

Computer professionals should have Bachelor's degrees, three to five years of experience, and technical skills matching the Hewitt Associates' environment (COBOL, C, object-oriented skills). Hewitt Associates does hire entry-level computer professionals. The company looks for candidates who are SWANs: Smart, Work hard, Ambitious, and Nice. The average computer professional at Hewitt Associates has 10 years of experience and a Bachelor's degree. Hewitt Associates hires 75 to 100 computer professionals a year, finding candidates through campus recruiting and executive recruiters.
