Culture

Computer professionals work in cubicles and offices in a nonsmoking environment. Office hours are flexible between 6 AM and 6:30 PM. A 40-hour week is common, although there may be an occasional need for overtime. Overtime is not paid. Employees travel occasionally when laptop PCs are sent out to a field site to support claims processing during catastrophes. The company offers its computer professionals a business environment in which technology solutions are critical to the business, supporting external clients as well as internal customers.

Crawford observes eight or nine standard holidays and one personal day. Employees earn two weeks of vacation after one year, three weeks after five years, and four weeks after fifteen years. The company pays for life insurance and for dental insurance after one year. The company also pays the majority of the costs for medical and disability insurance. There is a 401(k) plan and stock option program. The company has an employee assistance plan and offers scholarships to employees’ dependents.

Candidates

Crawford is now looking for candidates with client-server and relational database management experience. Candidates should show drive and flexibility and be team players in a customer-service-oriented environment. Current staff members have an average of eight years of experience and Bachelor’s degrees. Crawford does hire entry-level computer professionals, although most of these positions are filled internally by staff members from the operations department. The company also has a co-op program.

Crawford hires 75 computer professionals a year, finding candidates through advertisements and employment agencies.
