Integrated, enterprise-wide technology. With 7,000 PCs globally, and a diverse manufacturing operation that spans 40 plants in 15 countries, perhaps it is no surprise that Armstrong is consolidating its applications under the SAP umbrella. Global collaboration among employees is accomplished with Lotus Notes. Armstrong has made a business out of expanding its cork competency, and had the good sense to put its name on all of its corks from its earliest days. The company quickly diversified from the hand-carved cork business into floor coverings, then ceiling coverings, and insulation.
Its emphasis on global operations carries with it the opportunity for employees to rotate on assignments to businesses in countries such as Germany and France. Seventy of the company's 245 technical professionals work outside the company's Lancaster, Pennsylvania, corporate headquarters. Says Richards, "We are very proactive in looking at people with international backgrounds."
Armstrong is the largest manufacturer of vinyl sheet and tile flooring, hardwood floors, and ceiling systems. An understanding of the business is key, and is reflected in the fact that 40 percent of the company's technical slots are filled with internal transfers. Says Robin Hill, Director, Staffing, "A large part of our SAP team came out of the business side." Onsite facilities include laundry and banking services, a cafeteria, and a fitness center.
