Edward D. Jones & Co. is an investment firm that sells municipal, government and corporate bonds; mutual funds; and common stocks to nearly two and one half million individual investors and business owners through more than 3,300 branch offices throughout the United States and an affiliate organization in Canada.
Founded in 1871, Edward Jones is owned by one-third of its more than 10,000 employees. The company employs nearly 2,000 people (called associates) at corporate headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. Heavily invested in technology to provide investment services in small towns that formerly could not support a brokerage house branch office, Edward Jones installed one of the country's first enterprise-wide email systems in 1979. It was the first securities firm to provide stock quotes from a single terminal in 1980, launched one of the nation's largest private business satellite networks in 1987, and was the first to provide real-time confirmation of stock orders in 1993. Edward Jones was ranked number one in Money magazine's 1995 undercover survey of leading brokerage firms.

Technology
Edward Jones has IBM ES9000 and Hitachi Skyline mainframes, which process more than 10 million transactions a day. Its two IBM RISC/6000s provide communication between the mainframes and the VSAT satellite network which connects all the branch offices' Intel-based Solaris servers. The three St. Louis campuses are connected by multiple Ethernet segments which are connected by ATM fiber, bridges, and routers. A telephone network which incorporates interactive voice response units (VRUs) automatically determines the geographic location of incoming calls and routes the calls appropriately. Optical storage is used to provide online access to customer accounts. CA-IDMS, DB2, and ORACLE databases contain customer information and track all documents, which are bar-coded when they are printed in each branch office. Daily video programs are broadcast from headquarters to each branch office, where they are shown real-time or taped automatically for future playback. Branch office laser printers are connected to the enterprise network, and are in turn connected to major suppliers for automated supply reordering using electronic data interchange (EDI).
Job titles for the company's 800 computer professionals (with consultants) include Programmer/Analyst, Network Support Technician, Performance Support Specialist, Service Specialist, System Administrator, Systems Programmer, Software Engineer, Technical Consultant, Team Leader, Business Analyst, and Director.
